Cannabis dispensary numbers climb to 19 in Kalamazoo

Considering marijuana provisioning centers that have already opened or are in planning stages, a total of 19 locations in Kalamazoo have received licenses.

Deputy City Manager Jeff Chamberlain confirmed those numbers. What is unclear, however, is how much of a boost those 19 new businesses will provide to the city’s tax base.

Kalamazoo would receive property tax revenue from the businesses. The city is set to receive a pro-rated share of a 10% excise tax imposed on adult-use marijuana sales. The city does not expect to receive any of that revenue until 2021.

One of those licencees is Exclusive Brands, which held a grand opening Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020, for it’s new marijuana dispensary at 937 Foster Ave. in Kalamazoo.

“I never find there to be too many coffee shops,” said Narmin, Jarrous, executive vice president of business development at Exclusive Brands. “I like getting coffee from a lot of different places. I never find there to be too many restaurants. So I don’t think there is such a thing as too many dispensaries. I just hope as more places open up that just increases access for people to get cannabis.”

Marijuana prices in Michigan were much higher during late 2019 and early 2020. They came down and stabilized when more companies decided to start grow operations because of a supply shortage.
